Independent Living

INDEPENDENT LIVING

Persons with developmental disabilities want to decide how to live their lives, determine what supports they need, and how to consume their resources within their own means, just the same as anyone in the general population does. Giving adults with developmental disabilities and families of children with developmental disabilities more control over their budgets and how their resources are consumed. This empowerment gives more control over their lives. These individuals will experience more freedom and choice, resulting in a better quality of life. The ability to hire and fire one’s own direct support worker is affirming and self- actualizing.

FREEDOM OF CHOICE

Once a consumer makes the decision to obtain support and services in a consumer-directed model, it is reflected in the consumer’s Individual Support Plan (ISP) and in their Individual Budget. The information shared with the consumer, to assist them in managing their own supports, is obtained through their own service facilitator.
